Rotterdam - music, culture and nightlife

rotterdam.jpgRotterdam is Europe’s largest port and the second largest city of the Netherlands. With a vibrant multicultural population, Rotterdam is very much the up-and-coming city, which now stages many cultural events of international interest, and boasts some stunning modern architecture. Somewhat in competition with the more famous Amsterdam, it was once said that Rotterdam was the place for earning the money, and Amsterdam was the place for spending it. However, Rotterdam is now becoming famous in its own right for its nightlife and culture, hosting a number of summer music festivals such as the Latin American-style Summer Carnival, the Metropolis Pop Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and other musical events. Rotterdam is also home to hardcore techno groups such as Neophyte.

As well as an amazing music scene, Rotterdam has a variety of museums such as The Netherlands Architecture Institute, The Historical Museum, The Maritime Museum, The Natural History Museum and the Volkenkundig Museum, which covers various peoples and cultures around the world. As well as a zoo, there is Oceanium, which is a walkthrough sea aquarium where you can see many fascinating species of fish.

If you find yourself in the north of England, a convenient way to get to Rotterdam is by P&O Ferries from Hull – you leave Hull in the evening, eating your evening meal as the ferry makes its way down the Humber, and out past Spurn Point, you enjoy the bars and nightlife on board ship, and when you have breakfast the next day you are in the port of Rotterdam, ready to disembark and go and explore. You are sure to have a wonderful time in Rotterdam.
