Slovenia - a small country with great variety

Once part of former Yugoslavia, Slovenia gained independence in 1991, and is fast becoming an attractive destination for both summer and winter vacations.
Slovenia has lovely beaches on its tiny little bit of the Adriatic coast, which measures precisely 46.6 km. Along this relatively small stretch is to be found the old port of Piran, the picturesque fishing town of Izola, the majestic white-stoned town of Koper, and the more modern resort of Portoroz. The coastline also has dramatic cliffs, and provides a wonderful environment for a large number of bird species.
Slovenia’s Lake Bled is very beautiful, and made more so by the tiny island with a church and small museum that you can visit. On the shores of the lake, in the small town of Bled itself, there are delightful restaurants where you can sit out and admire the lake while being served a delicious lunch. We recently dined there, and had an excellent lunch with drinks for about $20.
Slovenia’s capital is Ljubljana, with theaters, museums, art galleries, festivals and historical buildings, including Ljubljana Castle.
The resorts of the Julian Alps offer exciting winter holidays with skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports at prices which compare very well with ski resorts on the more western side of Europe.
In the summer there is plenty of opportunity for hiking and cycling in the countryside, but if you prefer a more serene and relaxing time, Slovenia also has numerous thermal spas and health resorts where you can sooth the cares away.
For a very small country, Slovenia has a lot to offer.
