The Algarve - spectacular beaches
The Algarve is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, with its coast on the Atlantic Ocean, giving it a summer climate that is a little cooler and more pleasant than the searing heat of Mediterranean southern Spain. The Algarve has been a popular European tourist spot for some decades due to its wonderfully clean beaches, spectacular coastal rock formations, limestone caves and grottoes, sparkling blue sea, delicious fish dishes, relaxing nightlife and good wine. It is also relatively inexpensive for those arriving from the UK and North America.
One of the most well-loved coastal resorts is Albufeira, with its narrow streets and pretty white houses with artistic ceramic tiles, as well as modern tourist developments, a marina and golf courses. Albufeira offers plenty to do in the evening with a variety of bars and restaurants ranging from the traditionally Portuguese to Irish establishments.

The small city of Lagos dates back to Carthaginian times, and was later occupied by the Romans, and so has a number of historical sites, including a fort. The Church of St Anthony has a large number of visitors every year due to its fantastically lavish interior, and there is also a museum of regional artifacts. As well as the historical angle, Lagos has some wonderful beaches nearby that are wonderful for relaxation. Tavira, noted for its stunning architecture, dates back to the Phoenicians, and was later occupied by the Romans, then the Moors. Quarteira has 2km of Blue Flag Beach, making it the perfect spot for those who enjoy swimming in the sea. Vilamoura, is a private and highly rated resort, combining exclusivity with high standards.
Other resorts worthy of mention are Portimao, Armacao de Pera, Monte Gordo, and Lagoa which has the beautiful beach known as Praia da Marinha.
The Algarve is fairly hilly, and offers some excellent walks as an alternative to having fun at the beach.
The Algarve is served by Faro Airport, and there are plenty of reasonably priced packages available.
