Greece - classical and modern

Regarded as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, with the wonderful heritage of classical times, and not only that, but a fantastic coastline, exciting islands to explore, delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and a laid-back, friendly culture too, Greece is a delightful place to visit, with plenty to satisfy those eager for history, as well as those seeking a relaxing sunshine holiday in beautiful surroundings.

In Athens you will find the Acropolis, the dramatic high citadel of the ancient city, with the Parthenon – the temple built in honor of the Greek goddess, Athena – and the remains of other civic and sacred buildings.

Ninety kilometres south-west of Athens, on the peninsula known as the Pelopennese, you will find Mycenae which dates back to the second millenium BC, famous for its impressive Lion Gate. On the Pelopennese are numerous other important archaelogical sites such as Corinth, Olympia, which was the original site of the Olympic Games, and Epidaurus, where you can still see plays performed in the ancient amphitheater.

No trip to Greece is complete without a bit of island hopping - each island has its own character, and the views that you get when travelling between the islands, of the changing seascape and sky, is not to be missed. If you are a fan of John Fowles book “The Magus” you may well want to visit Spetses, the island which is the location for much of the book. The lovely island of Hydra, which is free of motor vehicles, is also the setting for a number of novels. Mykonos is famous for its intense partying by night, and fabulous beaches by day.

Food in Greece is relatively inexpensive and waiters will try to tempt you into their restaurants, frequently showing you the kitchen first, so that you can see their specialities. One of Greece’s famous dishes is moussaka, which is lamb with eggplant, tomatoes, potato and cheese sauce. Also popular are dolmades which are little parcels of vine leaves stuffed with mince.

All in all, a vacation in Greece provides an all-round satisfying experience.
