Costa del Sol - for sunshine in the winter
If you live somewhere that gets a little too cold from December through February, as is the case for many of us, you may fancy the idea of escaping to somewhere warm for a winter holiday, and perhaps now is the time to be thinking about making a booking. One of my favorite winter escapes is the Costa del Sol of Spain. Searingly hot in the summer months, in the winter this area becomes a haven of warm, but not too hot, sunshine, and a great place to relax.
The Costa del Sol is a wonderful location in which to spend the festive season: we spent an excellent Christmas and New Year at the Hotel Luca Costa Lago, a half-board hotel which is on the coast about twenty minutes walk away from Torremolinos. I had some misgivings about being close to Torremolinos, as in the UK it is known as a very touristy place, tending towards the overcrowded, but, in winter, we found it to be a small, pleasant town, and not too packed out with riotous holidaymakers at that time of year.
From Torremolinos, you can walk on for a further twenty minutes, and find yourself at the lovely marina of Benalmadena, which is one of the most attractive marinas I have ever come across, with its beautiful, white painted, complex of shops and apartments, like an ice cream castle, surrounding ample space for boats and yachts.
The rooms at the Costa Lago are large and comfortable, with lovely bathrooms and spacious balconies, and the breakfasts and dinners were full buffets, with every type of food you could possibly want. Most hotels do a gala night for Christmas and New Year, with special foods and entertainment.
So, instead of another holiday season in the snow, why not head for the Costa del Sol?
