Copenhagen - city of the Little Mermaid

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is on the east coast of the island of Zealand, and also partly on the island of Amager. Copenhagen has been ranked as one of the world’s best cities to live in. Influenced by the work of architect Jan Gehl, Copenhagen is extensively pedestrianized.

Copenhagen has had quite a jazz scene for a number of years, and the popular Copenhagen Jazz Festival takes place every summer.

The street known as Stroget is well-known for its street entertainment, with jugglers, musicians, and street theater taking place along its length.

Do you love Danish pastries? Here you will find plenty of them. Also popular are the small stands selling delicious hot dogs that you can eat as you walk down the street. There are also shops selling kebabs and felafel. Open sandwiches are very popular in Denmark, as in most of Scandinavia, and in Copenhagen the seafood ones are especially delicious – make sure you try a prawn and egg open sandwich, with mayonnaise and herbs.

There is no shortage of significant places to visit in Copenhagen, and there is an excellent integrated public transport system to get you around, or if you prefer the exercise, why not hire a bicycle, and make use of the many cycle paths that cross the city?

Amalienborg Palace is the winter home of the Danish royal family, and has a wonderful rococo interior. You can also visit the lovely Christiansborg Palace, or Borsen, the former Stock Exchange Building, and don’t forget the Little Mermaid Statue in Copenhagen Harbor, which symbolizes Copenhagen itself.
