Visit Santa in Lapland

If you have young children who are still of an age where they believe in Santa Claus, then at this time of year you might like to take them to Lapland for a very seasonal holiday. In case you are wondering where Lapland is, it is in fact not an official, independent country at all, but is the cultural region inhabited by the Sami people of northern Europe, and spans over four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.

A winter holiday in Lapland offers all kinds of activities, you can see real reindeer, you can go ice fishing, see what it’s like inside a real igloo, go tobogganing, and go on exciting sleigh rides through the snowy forests. There are even high speed dogsled rides where Siberian huskies pull you along at an impressive speed, while you try to catch your breath.

In Lapland in the midwinter the sun does not rise above the horizon, and so there is a day long twilight, but rest assured that the sheer brightness of the snow in some way makes up for this, and it does not seem as dark as you might expect. Add to this all the fairy lights, Christmas decorations, candlelight, and roaring log fires, and you have nothing but a warm glow of merriment. And, if you’re lucky, you may even get to see the wonderful Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights.

So, if you want to give your children a wonderful treat, or if you just fancy experiencing the winter wonderland for yourself, there are a number of packages available: Emagine and Santa Trips offer breaks to Finnish Lapland. There are even daytrips available!
